Lots of anglers fish a grub during the winter but few fish a spade tail grub. The spade tail is just that--a grub with a spade shaped tail instead of a ribbon tail. The spade tail is usually fished on a 1/8-1/4 oz. ball head jig with a 3(0) hook. The grub is rigged so the tail is horizontal---not veritical as a ribbon tail. The grub is fished on the bottom and is supposed to resemble a minnow or small shad feeding on rock algae. The simplest technique is to cast the grub into the 4-8ft. range of water, let it sink to the bottom(make sure you watch the line for a bite) and gently pull on the line. This makes the tail rise off the bottom and look like a feeding baitfish. Use the lift and drop retrieve back to the boat as bass tend to follow the bait until it is pulled to the surface. This is a slow retrieve bait for cold water bass so don't get impatient and fish it too quickly. Another namr for the spade tail grub is a stingray grub.
