This is actually emotional for me. My uncle died in a house fire when I was very young. The fire was labeled as "suspicious"(Selling meth on the reservation will do that). As far as I know, that was the end of it. The week before he died, Randy asked my grandma for a Book of Mormon and my grandpa for a blessing (draw your own conclusions from that one).
The fire that killed him and gutted his house left one single UPSTAIRS closet mainly intact. About the only things from the house that didn't burn were inside that closet. Including the bible and Book of Mormon my grandma gave him the week before, his USMC class A's and an old 20ga shotgun that was held by my dad and given to me when I was older.
I took untold numbers of game with it as I was a kid, but before long I grew out of it. When I left home, I didn't even take it with me. So, there it's sat for all these years untouched in my old bedroom closet at my folks house until last week when my dad brought it out here.
Last night, I stripped it and started sanding it. Tonight, I put the iron on it to raise the grain to finish the sanding. The moisture and heat brought out scents locked in the wood that made my whole basement smell like a campfire, only it wasn't a campfire that caused the odor. It was the smell of a house fire that caused the death of my 29yr old uncle. The plan was to make it nice and pass it down to scout for his first shotgun, but now I'm not sure. If any of u guys are religious, believe me when I tell you that I had a prompting tonight. I saw what needs to be done. I'm now going to get a plate etched with my uncles name, date of birth, and date of death and double my efforts to make the thing better than new and then pass it on to my son. It'll stay in the safe till then.
    Thank you guys.
