There are two separate retirement plans for federal gov't. The older plan, CSRS, was funded at 50% by the employee and 50% by the gov't. In 1982, CSRS was fully funded for perpetuity and money would still be in the pot when the last CSRS retiree died. Ronald Reagan wanted to build his 600 ship navy and STARWARS. He TOOK the money in the CSRS fund to pay for these projects and left an IOU in it's place. Now, politicians say the fund will run dry before the last retiree dies and therefore pensions should be on the table for reduction. Remember, 50% of the plan was funded out of the participants pay to bregin with. If you double dipped and got another gov't pension after your military service, you have paid 50% for that pension. Wow, ever tried to cash in an IOU? The newer retirement plan, FERS, is also partly funded by the worker. It's basis is Social Security and whatever funds the worker puts into a 401k fund with 5% matched by the gov't. A SMALL military pension, your 401k and whatever Social Security is left when you retire. Now, THAT'S a really attractive retirement. You put your butt on the line for your military pension, you work and partly pay for your gov't pension, then Social Security. I'm surprised everyone doesn't jump at the chance to service the nation and be overly rewarded. :patriot:
