For Veteran's Day

Traded in my youth and innocence
Time to grow up and be a man
Forget the games of last night
tomorrow it's hand to hand.

See the people with terror in their eyes
Watch the big bird drop napalm from the sky
be brave and shoot to kill
and you'll come home alive.

The Gulf of Tonkin
was somewhere out at sea
in the jungle of the Mekong
is where I had to be

The loved ones back home
they didn't matter any more
had to be a hero
Ain't that why I went to war?

We soon became brothers
and one would always cry
when you got the word
that some of your brothers died

I'll get to them, before they get to me
To a dozen Viet Cong
I'd be the last thing that they'd see.

18 months I served in hell
I fought hard and I fought well
I made it home and though I seldom pray
I think of those 12 Cong
each and everyday.

So I learned to hate and I learned to kill
But God still kept me from harm
I'll never forget the place that I grew up
A land called Viet Nam.
