Powerful countries have gun control because they do not trust their population not to revolt against the rulers. The US is one of a handful of countries to allow citizens weapons and the only country to encourage it. The reason is inherent in how the country was formed from revolution and the fact that a gun was a tool in defense of the family in a hostile environment. Why is there little gun control today?
The answer lies in an unofficial policy of the US. The US is the only major power to be in almost constant warfare. The policy is to always keep a trained cadre of combat hardened troops armed within the population. Opponents know that if they go to war with us they face a reserve of one million or more COMBAT trained troops that could be called on to fight. Other nations keep larger standing armies but they do not fight wars and are not combat hardened. A BIG difference in the reserves a nation can call on. That we are not threatened lies in the fact that no other country can field a combat hardened army. Another policy is to keep arms in the population for these reserves to use if invaded. A much larger percentage of our population knows how to handle and shot weapons--another plus for us. Automatic weapons can be easily made from most "assault" type weapons if needed.
I talked to a Nato general at a conference and brought up this subject. He said that the Russians were at their military peak when we were fighting the Vietnam War. Could the Russians have invaded Europe at that time? Yes, but they knew they the US had several million Vietnam Vets to call on to fight in Europe and could easily fight two wars.
An armed citizenry allows the US great latitude in forming it's foreign policy.
