Help with a phrase

    The past few weeks, I've watched some some war drama movies. Civil War, WWII, Vietnam. Something struck me. In all of the movies somewhere in it when a soldier is dying, they insist on dying with boots off. Comrades are seen removing the boots of the dying. What is that? What is the fascination or wanting to die with their boots off?
