Last night's fishing

The fishing has been slow, slower, etc., even at night. Last night I tied on an old lure called an Ozark Woodchopper. It is a 6 in. long topwater with 2.5 in.. stainless steel chopper props on both ends. You can twitch it and barely make the props turn or you can crank it fast and it sounds like a small outboard. I cranked that bait hard and got 5 of the most violent strikes I've had in years. Biggest LM was about 3-4 lbs. I caught a wiper in the 15-20 lb. range. I swear that fish was swimming the other way when it hit the lure. My shoulders are still aching this morning. I got to tell you that one fish alone made the whole trip worthwhile. I put that woodchopper on my 7 ft. heavy action jig rod that I only use at night. It had 30 lb. trilene on it and I was hoping it was enough after that wiper hit. I've got to put a new treble of the bait because the wiper almost straightened out the hook. DNR stopped stocking wipers about 10 yrs. ago so I may have caught one of the last big boys in the lake. He's back in the lake for someone else to catch. I took pics but the fish flopped about so much they weren't worth keeping. I will always have the picture in my mind.
