Dixie, just finished watching a show on the Travel Channel. It was called something like Food Oddities or something like that. Anyway, this show was all about unusual foods from Maine. I was in and out of the room while it was on so I didn't get all the details. First part of the show was about Beaver. (I'm talking about the furry animal with buckteeth). The lady they had on the show is supposed to be some type of renowned Beaver cook and has written a beaver cookbook. They had beaver chili and several other dishes. Some were cooked in a hole in the ground, covered with dirt. Didn't see what part of Maine that was from. Next part was something about Moose Tartar with Duck gizzards and hearts. Next part was with some Indian looking dude out in the woods digging up Ramps and Nettle plants. They made soup out of these. Then the show host went out on a lobster boat owned by a lady out of Isle de Haut. Supposedly, she was portrayed in the movie The Perfect Storm. ( didn't see that movie myself). Then the guy goes to an island out from Portland to a "Food Death Match" where they had all kinds of weird stuff. Winner of this competition was some lady who had fixed June Bugs 3 different ways. Someone else at this match had fixed Cod, the whole thing, including the cheeks and tongue.
All in all, a very interesting show. Back before I retired, I went to Portland for a meeting, ( Hannaford was one of our customers). Our company rented an 80 ' sailboat and tooled us all around the bay? Harbor? Beautiful place in September ! . Then they dropped us off on one of the islands for dinner. I don't remember the name of the place, but it the building had been used as a military prison during the Civll War. Food was absolutely fantastic!
