Russian vs. NATO ammunition

Historically in warfare, the side with the shortest supply line has a good chance of winning. In a European war that advantage goes to the Russians. NATO's view is that the allies use standardised ammunition. If you run short, you have a chance to find some on the battlefield. If a country runs short, they can use another country's ammunition. The US, as a major contributor to NATO, has a very long supply line to Europe. The Russians, with the shorter supply line, uses different ammo types among it's forces. It feels it can always supply ammo to it's troops. NATO troops running short can't use the Russian ammunition. This is what happened to the German invasion of Russia in WWII. The Germans couldn't get resupplied and even though they had captured enormous amounts of Russian ammo, they couldn't use it. Just a perspective after the Makarov thread I started and the fact of it's ammo being hard to find.
