Skelator needs advice.

    I took the bass cat out today after sitting for a few months. Found out that the starter battery was dead dead dead. I have an on board charger that I thought was doing the job. Got back home and started playing around with the battery. I tried charging it and it wouldn't show that it was taking a charge. Tried my single phase charger from my little boat and it wouldn't charge either. Checked the water and found all cells to be low. Added distilled water and topped off cells. Connected the on board charger and it showed that it was taking a charge. Left it alone from 11am until 7pm when I checked it. Sounded like it was boiling away and I saw a little wisp of steam coming out of the battery. Turned off charger and felt battery. It was very hot . Felt the trolling motor batteries and they were cool. Boiling the battery would explain the low water content. Any ideas why the cranking battery was boiling and what causes that to happen? Bad charger of was it the fact that I had about 75% water in the battery instead of the acid mix?
