Speaking of Tailgates

Since AC's tailgate issue was mentioned again, I thought I'd try to find a defense for him.

I found it....... It seems that it was not operator error when his tailgate "just fell off". They make them that way so they are easily replaced after they buckle under a small load. I guess they have a long ways to go to be commercial grade.

Problem:

My tailgate fell off while in the down position, backing out of my driveway after hitting a 2-inch high bump at the mouth of the driveway. No real damage happened to my truck or tailgate. I was able to pop it right back on.


Action Taken:

a.) Called Dealer and took Tundra in to be looked at.
b.) Filed concern with Toyota Customer Relations online.
c.) Filed concern, online to various other organizations to make them aware of the problem, including NHTSA. Also posted threads dealing with this issue on TS.


Current Status:

a.)Neither the Dealer or myself could find anything obviously broken or loose that would enable tailgate to fall off like it did.
b.) Received form letrer with tracking number from Toyota Customer Relations.
c.) Have been contacted by several groups that I reported this problem to requesting more information on my problem. I have sent that information.
d.) I have reduced likelihood of my tailgate falling off again by putting a hose clamp around passenger side hinge. :doh:
e.) Waiting for Toyota to contact me for either more information or a fix to this problem.
