I'll let you folks debate the right or wrong of the politics but I'll provide some insight and ammunition for you to play with.

    1) The State Dept. has hazardous assignments such as Libya, Yeman and many others. To get ahead and be recognized for promotion, it helps your career to take such an assignment. Hazardous assignments are for the most part highly sought after, volunteer duty. YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GETTING INTO IN THE WAY OF DANGER.

    2) The State Dept. has a special perk for overseas duty: for every 6 months served overseas, you receive 12 months towards your retirement. If you serve 10 years overseas, you would have 20 years towards retirement. Overseas duty is highly sought after.

    3) The State Dept. has it's own intelligence service. There are usually a few of these people in harzardous embassies.

The intelligence agencies sometimes have personnel working in some position within an embassy for areas of interest. I have served on embassy duty so I'll add some perspective for you.

    1) Embassies are considered the territory of the occupying country. US embassies are our territory for as long as we occupy the embassy.

    2) You are allowed only so many formal guards for your embassy. The US uses the Marine Corp. to supply guards. Other personnel (intel or other trained personnel) attached to the embassy can be used to defend it. In any case the defending force is small. You are limited to the type and number of defensive weapons.

    3) The host country is required to defend foriegn embassies within it's borders. NO EMBASSY CAN BE DEFENDED FOR LONG BY IT'S OWN PERSONNEL.

What happened at Bengazi: the attackers had sophisticated weaponry; we had a small number of defensive personnel; THE HOST COUNTRY PERSONNEL WHO WERE SUPPOSED TO DEFEND US----DISAPPEARED, LEAVING US BASICALLY DEFENSELESS.
Now, you folks can debate whether the administration did enough protection. I'm pissed because we did not retatiate against the terrorists.
