Tough fisihing

    There is a short period when the males have not yet made the spawning bed and the female is in the area. I have found it almost impossible to get a bite during this time. Both genders refuse to bite. The female flees the area and the male gets lockjaw. I have actually dragged a lure across the male's nose without a bite from him. Once the male makes the bed, both genders are catchable. I saw at least 10 bass in the 5-8 lb. range near shore. In every case, they refused every lure I tried. Some of the lures I tried: jigs, tubes, grubs, finesse worms, lizards. The only lure they paid attention to was the clear strand jig. They would go to it but still rejected it.
