Beware of Dell

If you're not into computers, don't read, because it's going to be long winded :doh:

Among other things, I handle the IS duties for our division. Our techs have had Dell Latitude laptops (supposedly the higher grade) issued to them for the last 5 years. As the models have changed over the years, I've noticed the quality has decreased.

The newest model that we are getting now are Latitude E6410s. One of our programs that we load is 4+ GBs, with 1000s of files and takes around 3 hours to load. I starting loading the first of these new puters yesterday. After about an hour, I get an error that a certain file could not be read. I restarted and had the same error, except a different file. This disk has been used several times on our older ones, so it can't be a disk problem. I took the DVD drive out of another E6410 and tried in the troubled one. Same problem.

So before I left yesterday, I copied the disk (from an older known good DVD drive laptop) to an external drive. It took about 6 hours to copy to the drive overnight. :doh:

I installed the program to the suspect computer from the ext drive this morning with no issues. So I suspect the scan rate of the DVD drives is not what it used to be. I reckon they just do enough to play movies.

Dell used to have a good name, but over the last few years they have joined the cheap market and cut quality. Even the business line of Latitudes as gone to pot, but they do come with SD card readers and HDMI ports :head_on_wall:
