Check your military records

I recently had problems with my military records. A friend of mine passed a few weeks ao. He had been an officer in the Green Berets in Nam. I met him in Nam and we had been friends for almost 50 years. When he became seriously ill, he gave me his DD214 so I could handle his burial in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetary. It was the original and said exactly everything I had always known about him. An advocate for military vets at the hospice didn't know I had it and requested a copy of the DD214 through the "freedom of information act". IT said he was an E-5 and never served in Nam. His son, who had been estranged, was told his dad had lied about his service. I showed the original to everyone and it was accepted by authorities because I had personally known him in Nam. I was told things like this happened occassionally. Some damaged records had been recontructed by hand and the wrong name was used at that time. So, if you have the original DD214, you are ok. If you don't have the original and plan to be buried in a military cemetary, you need to request your DD214 and check it.
