DG Foods, a chicken processor based in Hazlehurst, Miss., will open a plant in Bastrop that will create more than 300 direct jobs, Gov. Bobby Jindal confirmed during an exclusive interview with The News-Star.

Jindal will officially announce the project at noon today in the Bastrop Visitors Center, where he will also discuss details of an incentive package the state committed to land the deal.

“It’s a huge step forward in developing the region’s economy,” Jindal said. “It’s going to create good-paying jobs in a community where they are desperately needed.”

Bastrop’s economy was decimated two years ago when International Paper closed its Louisiana mill and eliminated 550 jobs. IP was Morehouse’s largest private employer.

“When we came here in 2008 we made a commitment to do everything we could to help rebuild the economy,” the governor said. “We’re not done, but this is a great start.”

Jindal said the plant will create an additional 900 indirect jobs in the region.

DG Foods is a private company that recently expanded its processing plant south of Jackson, Miss., after the company won a contract with Bar-S Foods, Co.

Hey, Bobby!! Since you bribed DG to come here with tax cuts, how about stopping the hemorrhaging of jobs out of state by offering ALL the existing LA companies a tax break?
