There are are several components to a good pitching rod but the chief component is the rod blank. Many companies make good blanks and we can debate the merits of each. One thing good pitching rods have in common is the action and tip flex. The action (med hvy to hvy) is determined by the type of cover, lure weight and line size. The tip flex comes in med, fast, and X fast. All rods have to have a good backbone to fight and land the bass plus a fast enough tip to help with the distance of your pitch. For most jig pitching with 1/4-1 oz. jigs, I look for a med/hvy action with a fast tip. For jigs of 1+ oz., I use a hvy action with a fast tip. For heavy cover I use a hvy action with a med tip. If you can only have one rod, go with the med/hvy action and fast tip.
Another important point in selection is rod length. This has way to many variables to give just one choice and personal preference is also a factor. For general purposes, if you are 6 ft. or taller, use a 7' rod.; if you are shorter than 6 ft., use a 6' 10" rod. The longer the rod the more distance, the shorter the rod the more control. I hope this helps any novice anglers in selecting a pitching rod and is my humble opinion.
