Questionable numbers

  1. <DIR><DIR>This is not to start a smoking debate again, it is about control

Today our company sent out an email for "The Great American Smokeout". I was all excited because I thought it was about food, then I had to read it.

I wonder where these numbers come from.

Use of Tobacco products remains the nation's No. 1 cause of preventable death, killing approximately 443,000 Americans and costing $96 billion in direct health-care costs each year.
ยท Secondhand smoke alone kills nearly 50,000 non-smoking Americans every year, including 3,400 deaths from lung cancer.

Why do people believe the numbers they just pull out of the air?

If a smoker dies, are they added to the list, regardless of what killed them? If someone who lives with a smoker dies, are they added? Does everyone who dies of lung disease count? How much 2nd hand smoke must you be around to qualify to be a statistic? How many of those included are over 80?

A lady I work with lost her husband to cancer a few years ago. Since he smoked, everyone said he got it from smoking. He was an exterminator for 30+ years. I'm sure all the chemicals he was enclosed with had nothing to do with it. Even his doctor said it could have been several things.

Another loud mouth woman (a yankee of course) at work tells everyone that smokes, they are going to die. Them yankees sure are bright. She also tells everyone what they should eat, even though she is shaped like a penguin, but that's another rant.

We are going to have a nicotine test included in our drug test in 2012. We are not far away from premiums being based on BP, cholesterol, and BMI. Maybe then people will wake up and see what is happening :head_on_wall:
