I use 2 main techniques for fishing a shakey head. Feel free to post other shakey head techniques here.

I use ball head jigs with 3(0) or 4(0) hooks. 1/8 oz. to 15 ft. 1/4 oz. to 25 ft., 6'6" med/hvy spinning rod, 6-8 lb. line
I normally use 4 in. Zoom finesse worms but will go up to 6 in. I seldom use a floating tail type of worm.

    1) on the bottom with 5-10 seconds of shaking the line-then a quick pop off the bottom and repeat until I have covered the desired depth. I use this technique year round but it works best for me when the water temp is above 70 degrees.

    2) swimming and shaking the finesse worm around docks and cables. After I have determined the fish's depth, I will cast to my target on the dock and count the worm down to the desired depth. I will then swim the worm back to the boat with a slight liift and drop all the while shaking the line. Many times the fish will follow and strike the lure if they don't take it on the fall. When the fish are using the cables as cover they will always be just below the cable. I vertically jig the worm, constantly shaking it until I get a strike. Swimming a shakey head is my basic hot weather tactic for deep docks at LOZ.

This is not only a small limit technique. My largest shakey head fish was over 7 pounds.
