What bluegills eat

Discussion in 'Talk, Talk (off topic)' started by Just Piddling, May 13, 2012.

  1. I never had thought about it really, we just always used earth worms growing up. But, while I was cleaning them yesterday, the girlfriend was fascinated dissecting the innards (not real lady like, I know). One of the first ones had a rock hard stomach and as we squeezed it out, a complete 2" crawdad came out  This was not a giant fish, maybe 5-6"

We (she) inspected every stomach after that. We found 3 crawdads, several pincers and a 1/2" clam shell.

Another thing I noticed was the smaller ones were the ones with the eggs. The big bright colored throated fish didn't have any. After a web search, I found the bigger brightly colored bluegills are the males. I never knew
