    Christine Brown, manager of the Wilco-Hess station at 827 Jake Alexander Blvd. W., across from Harris Teeter, said her store’s $3.19 price for a gallon of gas was thanks in part to Sheetz other competitors. She looks at those competitors’ prices every day, then checks in with her corporate office in Winston-Salem, which generally tells her to match or undercut them.

    Joey Rusher, vice president of Rusher Oil Co. — the BP distributor for this area and owner of 20 stations — said it’s really just economics. The price gas station owners charge corresponds directly to the price they pay, he said. Rusher said daily prices are also affected by how much gas a station has in its underground tanks. If it paid less for that gas than the station next door did for its newer supply, it can afford to keep prices at the pump lower. “Really, it’s what you have in inventory and what your cost is,” he said.
