I saw a post on BBC which reminded me of this.
During WWII, Douglas MacArthur visited Port Moresby in New Guinea. My father was stationed there as a driver with the RAAF at the time and he was ordered to stand guard on MacArthur's plane overnight. He wasn't happy about the order because he had planned to do something else. During the night Dad took it upon himself to relieve MacArthur's plane of one of it's brass stars, about 6" high, from near the nose wheel. That brass star later adorned the dashboard of Dad's truck, which he also bought with funds he raised by some rather dubious methods involving the US armed forces....

In Australia we refer to someone like Dad as a Larrikin, which can be described as; the folk tradition of irreverence, mockery of authority and disregard for rigid norms of propriety. It is an admired trait in Aussies.
Here's pic of Dad during WWII and his Foden which carried the "star"
