I've been doing this for several years now, but I heard Brent Ehrler in an interview on the Stray Casts, say he did not think it necessary and it just over complicated things.

I'm rethinking it. Does make re-riggin take more time.

First time I tried it, I went to a local lake and stuck a six pounder perfectly in the roof of the mouth, and that sort've hooked me on the idea. But since, I've missed the usual number of flippin bites and at times, I think the bait balls up on the straight shank hook.
