My thoughts regarding why the Florida pedestrian bridge collapsed...

    This is what I believe occurred, based on nothing more than the photos we have all seen the last couple of days.

    It would appear to me that there was an Interfacial Cold Joint Fracture as I noted in the upper left portion of the photo. A "cold joint" is when one pour of concrete is allowed to harden before the second pour is made. This results in a less than desirable bond between the two pours of concrete. Why anyone would allow such a thing to happen, as opposed to a single continuous pour for such a span is beyond me, and I can't swear that is what happened, but that is what appears to have happened.

    Once the span cracked, and began to collapse, it dragged the right end off of the pedestal completing the collapse. You will notice another red line there on the right end which I believe may have also been a cold poor fracture. I believe that it might have failed if the first one hadn't, but ultimately did fail as a result of the collapse.
